Our First Semester Tips for Freshmen

1. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Everyone around campus is willing to help. If you need directions to a building or room, don’t hesitate to pop into a professor’s office and ask.

2. Use your resources!

If you’re taking a writing class (like CRTW/HMXP), go to the writing center if you’re feeling unsure of your work! They’re more than willing to give you advice, tips, and strategies on how to strengthen your writing!

3. Explore Rock Hill or Charlotte instead of going home on the weekends!

There are so many fun things to do in Rock Hill! Hike Crowders Mountain, check out Rock Hill's famous Food Truck Fridays, or go apple picking at Windy Hill Orchard! There are so many events in Charlotte as well; the Spectrum Center almost always has a concert, show, or game to see! Carowinds is close too!

4. Participate in class!

Ask questions, answer questions, talk to your professor (it can get you extra credit, earlier exams to leave for break 3 days early, brownie points, etc).

5. Go to cultural events!

Don’t be that one senior who still has 10 left. Cultural Events can be fun! The Theatre and Dance Department almost always has a show happening! There are also film festivals where you can get a Cultural Event just for watching movie!

6. Get involved on campus!

Go out of your comfort and try something new and if you don’t like it, try something else!! That is a great way to get to know more people and keep yourself occupied throughout the year!

7. Use your ID for Student Discounts!

Many places give discounts, you just have to ask! Mellow Mushroom does $5 pizza on Wednesday for students! Plato's Closet, Clothe's Mentor, and Moe's do discounts too!

8. Take advantage of the West Center!

The Freshman 15 can be real... but the West Center has so much to do! There are group fitness classes taught by students such as Cardio Hip Hop, Yoga, Ab Attack, and Butts n' Guts! Grab some friends and find something that works for you!

9. Follow Thomson on Instagram!

Thomson Dining posts about their events or special desserts they have that day!

10. GO GREEK!

We may be a little biased... We have found our home not only in Alpha Delta Pi but with in the entire Greek Community. Organizations at Winthrop support each other to the fullest!
