Get Involved!

There are so many organizations and clubs on campus, here are some our sisters are passionate about!

Peer Mentor / First Year Experience

Working with FYE as a Peer Mentor means that I get to partner with a faculty member of the University and teach an ACAD class with him/her!! My faculty partner last year and this upcoming year is Dr. Ritzer!! Teaching an ACAD class means that I get to help first year students throughout their first semester at Winthrop!! It’s an amazing experience that allows me to offer my students the advice I wished I had had when I was a first year student!! Every first year student is different and unique, but we all connect through the same struggles that everybody goes through during the first year of college!! As a Peer Mentor, I also get the opportunity to help them feel more comfortable and accepted here at Winthrop!! By the end of the semester, every one of my students know that he/she has a home at Winthrop and seeing that transformation over the course of a semester is why I love being a Peer Mentor so much!!!!

Eagle STEM

Eagle STEM is a “science, technology, engineering, and mathematics” organization that you normally apply to prior to your freshman year, although some people apply later. Scholarships are available, which helps me tremendously. And essentially the summer prior to freshman year you spend 6-8 weeks in the “bridge program” and you take science courses to get you ahead, rotations in STEM labs, community service, and you get to know a lot more about campus and your resources as a science major. I got to do rotations in a few different chemistry/biology labs, and one of the labs I did a rotation in, Dr. Stern’s lab, I ended up getting hired to do summer research with him and made money!! I love the people in it and its such a great support group. We have monthly academic progress meetings to ensure that our grades stay high and we are required to go to at least 2 STEM oriented seminars per semester and write a summary about it.

Literacy Intervention Team

I’m apart of the Literacy Intervention Team at Winthrop. We go out to various elementary schools throughout the year and we are sent to classrooms and are assigned a group of students who need improvement with literacy. I love it because I get to help students improve their skills and find a love for reading! As an education major, this is one of my favorite organizations to be apart of on campus because I get to what I love. When I’m reading with the students and I’m helping them with difficult vocabulary, I see their wheels turning and the way their face lights up once they get it, it’s priceless. The LIT team is also a great way to get community service hours for Alpha Delta Pi or any other organization you’re apart of that may require community service! The literacy intervention team is a great way to get your name out in schools and create great relationships with students and teachers. It also gets you involved off campus. If you love kids, reading, and have a passion for teaching, the literacy intervention team is great!
